    Whats Happening Today

    The Fentanyl Epidemic

Today fentanyl is being mixed with other street drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. Other pills are being pressed to look like the commonly known pharmaceuticals like hydrocodone, xanax, oxycontin ect. but many users unaware they were actually taking fentanyl instead.

Drugs laced with fentanyl are unable to detect by tasting, smell nor are you able to see it unless you test your drugs with fentanyl test strips.

“Fentanyl is the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered,” said Administrator Anne Milgram. “Fentanyl is everywhere. From large metropolitan areas to rural America, no community is safe from this poison. We must take every opportunity to spread the word to prevent fentanyl-related overdose death and poisonings from claiming scores of American lives every day.”

    Fentanyl Awareness (dea.gov)

    Statistics

    The Fentanyl Epidemic

According to the cdc 107,375 deaths in the U.S due to drug poisonings in the last year and more than half of them were from fentanyl. Only two milligrams of fentanyl is considered a potentially lethal dose.

Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl.
Fentanyl-involved overdose deaths increased significantly in 2019 to 82%, compared to the previous years of 2015 to 2018. For 2020 and 2021, the average percentage of fentanyl-involved deaths was 85%.

Test strips are inexpensive and typically give results within 5 minutes, which can be the difference between life or death. Even if the test is negative, take caution as test strips might not detect more potent fentanyl-like drugs, like carfentanil.3

    Signs of Overdose

    Save a Life & Call 911

Recognizing the signs of opioid overdose can save a life. Here are some things to look for:

    • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
    • Falling asleep or losing consciousness
    • Slow, weak, or no breathing
    • Choking or gurgling sounds
    • Limp body
    • Cold and/or clammy skin
    • Discolored skin (especially in lips and nails)
If you call 911 or if someone is calling for you, then both of you are protected from any criminal prosecution. In fact, the Good Samaritan Law forbids prosecution on 911 overdose calls

  • Help Us Spread Awareness

Many parents today are unaware that fentanyl is added to many street drugs. Misusing drugs can be harmful and can alter the course of young peoples’ lives, preventing them from reaching their full potential. That's reason enough to have this difficult conversation with your children. Be certain that the discussion focuses on how much you care about your child’s health.

As a parent, your children look to you for help and guidance in working out problems and in making decisions, including the decision not to use drugs.

We need to be aware that there is an opioid crisis and the youth in our country are effected and that misusing opioids can have potentially harmful effects on the developing brain.
